PRESS RELEASE
[New York, NY] - On Monday, November 24 — mere days away from the busiest shopping day of the year — workers at the US branch of Back Market delivered a letter to CEO Thibaud Hug de Larauze and other executive members announcing the formation of their union and requesting voluntary recognition. This new union, known as Back Makers United, is affiliated with the Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU) Local 153.
As Back Market is a France-based company with a US focus, workers in the US have been critical to the company’s burgeoning success in the States. This union announcement comes at a time when workers are facing the busiest time of the year for e-commerce company — Black Friday and the subsequent holiday season.
Back Market is a B Corp-certified company that values sustainability, transparency, and a better world for all. To ensure these values remain the company’s mission, workers are asking for voluntary recognition of their union. They believe that forming a union will promote transparency, ensure equity, increase staff well-being, and add to the long list of reasons why they’re proud to work at Back Market.
“As a small team with ambitious goals within the international company, our staff is consistently called to work above and beyond to meet these strategic goals. Through this unionization, we work to ensure that we can continue to focus on our important environmentally-driven mission of providing quality refurbished tech products for all while making Back Market a sustainable and equitable workplace for all employees. We believe that this is the correct path forward to ensuring Back Market remains a place where we can be proud to work. We’re excited to see CEO Thibaud Hug de Larauze prove his commitment to these values that drive our company’s mission,” said Steven Rich, a 5-year Back Market employee and member of Back Makers United.
