OUR LETTER TO MANAGEMENT

November 24, 2025

Dear Thibaud Hug De Larauze,

This is a historic moment for Back Market in America — cue the bio-degradable confetti!

We are excited to notify you that 75%+ of eligible employees on the US team have joined together to form Back Makers United, a union affiliated with the Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU) Local 153. We are writing to request voluntary recognition of our union, and we authorize OPEIU Local 153 to represent us for collective bargaining.

We believe that forming a union will promote transparency, ensure equity, increase staff well-being and retention, and add to the long list of reasons why we are proud to work at Back Market.

As a union, we will build a stronger, more sustainable organization for all staff, the mission we serve, and partners we work with.

We want your support in this.

With the current success and growth of Back Market, recognizing and supporting the union now would prove the maturation of the organization. It will mean that not only are we committed to that growth — but we are committed to responsible and sustainable growth that benefits us all.

We are heartened by the thoughtful attention paid toward recent adjustments at the New York Back Market office, like the Flexible Spending Account option added to our benefits. We believe that a union will play a key role in strengthening staff investment and involvement in future organizational changes and compensation policies. We see this union as a way to work closely with leadership, to better serve the company mission, and achieve parity with our already unionized colleagues across the globe.

Our union is founded on, reinforces, and is in service of the Back Market mantras.

Fired up.

We believe in Back Market. This union has been formed in that spirit and our deep commitment to the work we do here. We believe that by having a seat at the table we help lift the burden from local U.S. leadership who have advocated for us, above and beyond their role in the organization. It allows us to work better towards the mission and participate more actively than we currently can at Back Market.

Don’t fear fear.

As this mantra tells us, “it’s our obligation to make bold moves.”As Back Market transitions from start to scale up, we know this is a bold move that only strengthens Back Market as a whole in the fight against new.

Say it straight, hear no hate.

The ability for workers to collectively bargain benefits everyone — the implementation of perks, promotions, and a healthy work environment should not heavily depend on an individual having a good relationship with their manager. By allowing the voices of the employees in the Back Market U.S. office to be truly heard through our union, we can become an effective partner with leadership — both on a local and global scale.

Humble hearts, dirty hands.

A mantra that asks us to cultivate a deep compassion and respect for our teammates, Unionizing allows us to do this on a more meaningful level than before.  When regular staff can have a meaningful say in decisions that affect them, it benefits Back Market collectively. It takes the burden off individual managers, who often struggle alone to advocate for their direct reports (or the office as a whole), even when it’s not their job. We are eager to collaborate with management.

One team, one time.

This union allows employees to come together to an unprecedented degree. In many ways, our request for you to recognize our union voluntarily is a request for parity with our colleagues in France and Spain. We believe that having a union is directly in service of “one team, one time.”

It’s not green enough.

Voluntarily recognizing the Back Market union will position Back Market not only as a leader in a fight for a sustainable future for tech, but for people too. It will demonstrate to the world that Back Market lives up to its role as B-Corp, a société à mission, and a bold visionary in our industry.

We believe Back Market is a place where management is open, receptive, and collaborative with staff. To unionize is to explicitly embrace those values and continue to work in good faith with one another. We want you to support us in this choice — as we all work to advance Back Market’s mission, together.

Please respond by contacting Scott Williams, Lead Organizer at OPEIU Local 153, at swilliams@opeiu-tristate.org or 919-794-1429 by noon on December 1, 2025.

We look forward to receiving your response to our request for voluntary recognition.

Thank you,

Back Makers United
